PUDUKOTTAI: Lack of enthusiasm among residual voters in getting photographed for the Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) has made the process of the issue of the cards a low-key affair in all the five Assembly segments in the district.
Work on door-to-door verification of an estimated 1.98 lakh residual voters for the purpose, is currently in progress and 40 photographers have been pressed into service. The current drive is to issue the EPIC to those voters, whose names are found in the electoral list, but not possessing the card.
Aranthangi Assembly constituency accounts for a maximum of about 46,000 residual voters, followed by Pudukottai - 42,000, Alankudi and Kulathur - 40,000 each and Tirumayam - 28,000.
The work of photographing the voters commenced in Aranthangi and Kulathur on November 10 and in Alankudi the subsequent day. In Pudukottai and Tirumayam, it was launched on Wednesday.
But, officials are surprised over the poor response to the drive which aims to check bogus voting and make the voters' list a fool-proof document, by incorporating the photos against the respective voter. Till Wednesday, only 3,419 EPICs had been issued to the residual voters in these constituencies - 1,607 in Aranthangi, 1,080 in Kulathur, 431 in Alankudi, 170 in Pudukottai and 131 in Tirumayam constituency.
Despite wide publicity such as announcement through public address system and release of scroll through the local television, the response has been poor says an official in Aranthangi.
The photographing of voters will continue in all the Assembly segments in the district till November 29.
Door-to-door photographing of voters as part of the photo electoral roll preparations would commence on Friday in all Assembly constituencies in Karur district, Collector T.N. Venkatesh has said. The process would go on till December 12, by which time images all the residual voters would be captured using movie cameras. Simultaneously, electoral roll verification would also be taken up for undertaking corrections in entry records.
Participating in a training workshop here on Thursday for officials undertaking the work in various parts of the district, Mr. Venkatesh said that 100 per cent inclusion should be ensured as expeditiously as possible. Stressing the importance of thoroughly preparing the photo electoral rolls, the Collector solicited the cooperation of all officials concerned.
