Bench adjourns the matter by a week
MADURAI: A public interest litigation petition has been filed before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court to restrain companies manufacturing condoms from projecting them more as a product for satisfying sexual instincts than as a contraceptive or a protective gear against sexually transmitted diseases.
Since the petitioner had included only the Central and State governments as respondents, a Division Bench comprising Justice Dharma Rao Elipe and Justice P.P.S. Janarthana Raja felt that it would not be appropriate to decide the matter without hearing the manufacturers.
Hence, the matter was adjourned by a week to enable the petitioner to implead private manufacturing companies.
The petitioner, C. Ravikumar, a businessman based in Madurai, said that printing of obscene pictures on condom packets and lascivious advertisements of the product had pushed the preventive medical benefits of the product to the backseat.
He said there was no positive response to the representations sent by him to the authorities concerned.
