CHENNAI: Perumpallam P. Venkatesan, a noted thavil player of yesteryears, died on Wednesday. He was 89 and is survived by five daughters and three sons.

A student of the legendary Natchiarkoil Raghava Pillai, Venkatesan joined the troupe of nagaswaram vidwan Karukurichi P. Arunachalam.

He accompanied Arunachalam in the famous song “Singaravelaney Deva” in the film ‘Konjum Salangai’.

After Arunachalam’s death, he joined the Music Department of Annamalai University as a thavil teacher.
