Unveiling a 10-point priority list, the new Vice-Chancellor of Salem Periyar University, K. Muthuchelian, said that he would ensure quality in academic sphere and transparency in administration.
After assuming charge as the Vice-Chancellor here on Wednesday, the environmentalist from Madurai Kamaraj University told the media here that need-based courses in Nano Bio-Science, Genomics and Bio-Informatics – all post-graduate courses, would be introduced in the university.
Besides a separate chair for Tamil Classical Language and for Periyar Studies, especially for the translation of his works, the university, the Vice-Chancellor said, could not shirk its environmental responsibility of mapping and recording the bio-diversity in Shevaroyan, Kalrayan and other hills that surround Salem city and its district. “A research centre will be set up,” he said and added that the possibility of opening new centres of PRIDE ((Distance Education) abroad would be explored.
Mr. Muthuchelian also pointed out that the university would be ‘student-friendly' for which various activities such as the strengthening of Youth Welfare Centre and Grievances' Redressal Centre would be operated. Besides, Placement Cell and Women Studies' Centre would be added to the list along with Centre for Industry Linkage.
“The university will be transformed into a centre for excellence for which various administrative reforms also need to be initiated. Steps also will be taken up to enhance the varsity's financial resources and identify the areas where the lacunae persists,” he pointed out. He said that he would be available easily and sought the cooperation of all in his endeavour.
Senior officials, faculty, syndicate members and others also congratulated the Vice-Chancellor.
