The recent recognition of the railway station in Ooty as the best maintained station in  the small segment in Salem division has been greeted by all sections of the society here.

Heritage Steam Chariot Trust founder K.Natarajan told The Hindu here on Monday that on behalf of the people of the Nilgiris, a function would be organised at the station on Wednesday to mark the honour bestowed on the station. Station Master Padmanabhan said that an award had been given.

Meanwhile, with the number of tourists making a bee line to the stations of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) in Ooty and Coonoor steadily increasing, the demand for introducing a summer special has become strident.

Representatives of the hospitality and travel industry and NMR enthusiasts said that despite a number of assurances given by railway officials at various levels, a summer special is yet to be introduced. Pointing out that until a few years ago it was an annual practice, they said that of late the Southern Railway was dilly-dallying on the issue.

It was expected that a special train would start running from the Tamil New Year day. A railway source said that the proposal was awaiting clearance in Chennai.
