Children below the age of one will now be administered Pentavalent vaccine in lieu of the regular DPT and Hepatitis vaccines. The vaccine will be given by the Government of Puducherry through Primary Health Centres.
On Thursday, the Union Territory officially launched the Pentavalent vaccine scheme.
The vaccine will help to fight diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, Hepatitis B and Hemophilus influenze type b (Hib) viruses, according to Deputy Director of Immunisation N.L.N. Sharma.
It would be given to all children at six weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks of age and must be administered before the child turns one.
A total of 22,000 children in the Union Territory would receive this vaccination. It would be available at PHCs every Thursday.
The vaccine has been obtained through the Union government, which is fully funding the scheme, Dr. Sharma said.
