Facility for payment of property tax and water charges through credit cards
TIRUCHI: Taxpayers in the city can remit their dues with a swipe of a credit card.
The Tiruchi Corporation on Monday introduced a facility for payment of property tax and water charges through credit cards.
The Mayor, Sarubala R.Tondaiman, inaugurated the facility at the computerised service centre at the corporation main office.
The facility would be extended to service centres in all corporation zonal offices within the next two weeks.
However, payments made through credit cards would attract a service charge of 1.50 per cent.
The facility comes in the wake of success of online tax payment system in vogue over the past couple of years.
The online system is available at corporation service centres and 21 branches of public and private sector banks.
Nearly 90 per cent of tax collection was being done through online system, the Commissioner, Harmander Singh, said.
A multi-coloured receipt design was introduced.
Besides, the corporation was planning to introduce mobile collection centres.
Though the corporation has desisted from launching an intensive drive to mop up tax dues due to recent floods, officials said revenue realisation was on target this fiscal.
The corporation was hoping to exceed the record achieved last year, when the civic body mopped Rs.10 crore over the previous fiscal.
