SALEM: The Salem District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed General Insurance Company to pay a compensation of Rs. 25,000 to a medical insurance policy holder.

Selvanathan of AN Mangalam village took medical insurance for himself, his wife and mother. His wife Santhana Mary underwent treatment for her neck pain at a hospital in 2002 and filed a claim for Rs. 36,891 towards the medical expenses. But the firm refused the claim. Aggrieved, the policy holder moved the consumer court by filing a case through Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council Chairman S. Selvam.

After hearing the arguments, Judge Sathyamurthi directed the firm to pay the sum of Rs. 36,891 with six per cent interest and a compensation of Rs. 25,000 to the complainant.

The judge also directed the firm to pay Rs. 2,000 towards legal expenses.

In another case, the forum directed a computer sales showroom in the city to pay a sum of Rs. 50,000 as compensation to a customer for deficiency in service.

Vincent Mathew of TNHB Colony bought a computer from the showroom for Rs. 32,500 in December 2006. He, however, found the computer was not working and asked the shop to replace it or return the amount. As the firm turned down his request, he moved the forum.
