The Madras High Court bench here has granted three-day parole to a remand prisoner to attend his mother’s funeral.
Justice R. Mahadevan granted parole to M. Palpandi based on a petition filed by his father K. Muthuraman.
According to Mr. Muthuraman, his son was arrested by the South Gate police in connection with an extortion case on December 15 and is lodged in Madurai Central Prison.
The prisoner’s mother M. Sundari died on December 27 at her house in Sappani Kovil South Lane.
Therefore, Palpandi should be granted parole for a week to attend the funeral, he pleaded with the court.
On the instructions of the court, the additional government pleader also confirmed the death of the prisoner’s mother.
In his order dated December 28, Justice Mahadevan granted parole to Palpandi and directed the Superintendent of Madurai Central Prison to permit him attend his mother’s funeral with necessary escort free of cost. The judge directed Palpandi to return to the prison by 6 p.m. on December 30.
