: Parents should concentrate on the overall development of their child and not just mere scores of good marks in examinations and they also have a larger responsibility in restricting the kids on certain things and liberal in other cases, according to V. Jayanthini, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, Madras Medical College.

Delivering the 7 {+t} {+h} M.S. Chellamuthu Endowment Lecture under the title “Role of parents in promoting mental health of children,” here on Thursday, she said that in the common man's perception, the words psyche, psychiatry and psychology had a stigma attached to it and even if someone had an informal chat with a psychiatrist, people would try to spin stories on the person and his mental health.

Ms. Jayanthini said that hard work should be duly supported with smart work and this would put us in a pedestal.

She said seven aspects are critically important in the promotion of mental health of children.

“Firstly, a condition of cognitive development in isolation does not serve the purpose, emotional development is essential and it has to be in line with Indian culture, which is actually sandwiched between westernisation and tradition. Socialisation is also important and it includes establishing social contacts which could be used for a social cause.”

Temperament is another important aspect, which is followed by psychosexual development, getting attracted to opposite sex is a natural instinct and all that a parent has to understand is how to draw a boundary on the level of freedom.

Moral development is also a necessary condition for the overall growth and to achieve all this, language and communication are indispensable. Parenting started from pregnancy and child-rearing practices and childhood environment did have a profound impact on child's mental development, she concluded.

Later in the evening, the M.S. Chellamuthu Award-2010 was bestowed upon M. Ranganathan, former professor of Psychiatric Social Work, National Institute of mental Health and Neurosciences, in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the field of psychosocial rehabilitation. M.V. Muthuramalingam, chairman, Velammal Group of Institutions, presented the award in the presence of B.T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-Tech Arai Limited, Gerard Herman Helmink, executive director, SARI Foundation, The Netherlands, and C. Ramasubramaniam, State Nodal Officer, District Mental Health Programme.
