A fire in a private parcel service godown has destroyed crackers, two-wheelers and other accessories at Maniyanoor here on Sunday morning.

Residents in the area noticed smoke emanating from the godown at around 11 a.m. But, soon they heard a loud explosion and feared of bomb blast and ran amuck. Fire and Rescue Services personnel in four vehicles rushed to the spot and put off the fire in an hour.

Inquiry revealed that goods from Southern districts were kept in the godown for distribution. Since Deepavali is fast approaching, huge quantities of crackers were stored in the godown that were meant for delivery to the customers on Monday.

All the crackers, two-wheelers, tyres and other accessories were completely damaged in the fire. The owner, Arundas, claimed the damage could be over lakhs of rupees.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
