TIRUNELVELI: A shepherd was killed by a panther on the Western Ghats on Thursday.

The police said Krishnan (45) of Thalavaipuram under the Panagudi police station limits and a 10-year old boy, also from the same area, had taken their herd to the Western Ghats near Mahendragiri, a habitat known for panther, on Thursday. After leaving the flock on the periphery of the forest, they went to the Alanthuraiyar channel, situated deep inside the jungle, to have their lunch as water was flowing there. When they were about to have the food, a panther attacked Krishnan, in which he was killed on the spot after suffering grievous injuries on the head and neck, as the predator mauled him. However, the boy managed to escape. On information, the Panagudi police sub-inspector, Anbu Prakasam, rushed to the spot and recovered the body, which was brought to the plains in a tractor.

The District Forest Officer, H. Venu Prasad, has appealed to the shepherds and others not to venture into the forest for any reason, as panthers' movement was very high in the Western Ghats, particularly the forests around Mahendragiri.
