MADURAI: A panel comprising secretary of district legal services authority and three advocates visited the Madurai central prison here on Thursday.

According to reliable sources, Sub-judge K. Venkataswami and three advocates S. Muthukumar, S.P. Paneerselvam and S. Sivakumar, accompanied by jail officers visited remand prisoners detained in different blocks. The State Legal Services Authority had directed all the district legal services authorities to visit prisons in their jurisdiction and find out the number of remand prisoners whose period of detention could have been more than the sentence that would have been awarded to them in case of conviction and file a comprehensive report. Sources said that the panel received about 60 petitions from the inmates who had been detained for over 3 months and some over 6- month period. They had committed robbery and other offences.

Some of the petitioners claimed that they were actually juveniles and blamed the police for giving a false age.The panel is likely to visit sub-jails at Melur and Tirumangalam also.
