The Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa University, S. Sudalaimuthu, has asked the principals and managements of affiliated colleges to take immediate steps to start community colleges.

Presiding over a meeting of principals of the affiliated colleges at the university campus in Karaikudi on Wednesday, he said the meeting was aimed at discussing ways to frame policies and procedures to start community colleges as per the directions of the Department of Higher Education.

He said the colleges could play an important role in offering employment-oriented courses to the uneducated youth.

The university had initiated steps for offering skill-oriented programmes. The Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, would approve the certificate courses offered under the community college concept.

Mr. Sudalaimuthu said it was resolved to constitute a committee for taking policy decisions regarding the establishment of affiliated colleges and offering skill-oriented programmes. The committee members were R. Krishnaraj and C. Sanjeeviraja, syndicate members, V. Manickavasagam, Controller of Examinations, T.R. Gurumoorthy, Dean, College Development Council and three principals of affiliated colleges.

The next meeting of this committee would be held on November 15 to frame the policy guidelines for the community colleges. K. Manimekalai, Registrar (in-charge) took part in the meeting.
