TIRUCHI: All village panchayats in the district should start the works sanctioned under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme within a week, Collector T. Soundiah has said.

Speaking at special review meetings to discuss the implementation of the scheme with village panchayat presidents of the district over the past two days, Mr.Soundiah observed that works sanctioned under the scheme have slackened in some village panchayats owing to the monsoon rains since October. Some panchayat presidents have not evinced much interest in implementing the scheme. Panchayat presidents showing any hesitation to implement the scheme works would face stern action under the Panchayats Act, he warned.

The Collector pointed out that the wages under the scheme has been increased to Rs.100 a day since January 1, 2010. Panchayat presidents had a duty to ensure that the government schemes reached the targeted groups.

R.Venkatachalam, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, senior district and union officials and panchayat presidents attended the meetings.
