TIRUCHI: A panchayat president was hacked to death on Thursday in Samayapuram police station limits by a five-member gang allegedly led by his predecessor.

Kilikoodu Panchayat president Rajangam (45), who belonged to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), was riding a motorcycle when the gang, allegedly led by Balakrishnan, a Congress activist, attacked him. He died on the spot.

Sources said Balakrishnan was enraged when Rajangam refused to allot him a free colour television set though his name had figured in the list of beneficiaries. Balakrishnan got a set after Revenue department officials intervened.

The second accused ,Alagirisamy (29), a clerk in the local body, was allegedly embroiled in a land dispute with Rajangam, who was his relative.

The police said Alagirisamy's accomplice Raja and two others were the other accused.

The police have formed a special team to nab the accused.
