Palani-Pollachi broad gauge conversion work would be over by March, said Divisional Railway Manager A.K. Rastogi here on Monday.
After inspecting facilities at the Palani railway station ahead of the commissioning of passenger train services on the recently completed Dindigul-Palani broad gauge line on Tuesday, he said that officials had been instructed to complete the Palani-Pollachi work by the end of this fiscal.
Three passenger trains would be operated to Palani from Dindigul.
The first train will start at 5.30 a.m., second one at 1 p.m. and the third one at 5.30 p.m. The travel time would be one-and-a-half hours.
The Southern Railway had also sent proposals to the Railway Board for operating long distance express trains to Rameswaram and Chennai.
On approval, such train services would be operated from Palani.
Mr. Rastogi discussed with officials on construction of a two-storey station building at Palani.
As the station served an important temple town, the façade should reflect it, he also said.
The DRM travelled in a special train with a technical team to Palani to check technical aspects on the track and facilities at the railway stations en route.
