At a cost of Rs. 20 crore

THANJAVUR: It has been proposed renovate the palace complex here at a cost of about Rs. 20 crore , said M. S. Shanmugham, Collector, here on Thursday.

Work would start once the Central Government gave its financial assistance, he told presspersons after garlanding the statue of Maratta King Serfoji II at the art gallery to mark the King’s 232nd birthday celebrations.

The Collector also said that the art gallery had been renovated at a cost of Rs. 33 lakh. Tourist arrival has increased three-fold this year compared to last few years to art gallery, the Collector said.

King Rajah Serfoji II is the architect of the famous Saraswathi Mahal Library. Mr. Shanmugham said that the library was releasing 10 new books published by it and 17 books republished by it on the occasion. The library has so far published 525 books in various languages.

From Thursday, books are sold at 50 per cent concession. The library has about 50,000 rare manuscripts.
