Heavy shortage of labourers, implements

If machine is used the cost is Rs. 300 a hectare

If labourers are employed it is Rs. 14,000 a hectare

ERODE: Farmers have started harvesting of paddy at Thadapalli and Arakkankottai ayacut areas with the help of harvesting machines.

Paddy has been raised at Thadapalli and Arakkankottai ayacuts, Gobichettipalayam and Sathyamangalam taluks on over 5,000 hectares. The farmers had to pay heavily for agriculture labourers to transplant the crop.

When the crop is ready for harvest, labour is not available. So they had to depend on harvesting machines from other districts.

They brought 10 machines from Attur. The farmers said that harvesting with machines is much cheaper than manual harvest.

They are paying Rs. 300 a hectare. Had they employed labourers it would have gone up to Rs. 14,000 a hectare.

Farmers at Bangalapudur, Athani, Pariyur and nearby areas too are using machines, it is alleged.

Some farmers said that machine harvest has affected the price of haystack, as they were damaged.
