MADURAI: Members of the Madurai District Agricultural Labourers’ Association took out a padayatra to the Collectorate here, pressing for a charter of demands, at Sivarakottai on Tuesday.
Over 20 members, led by their president, Veeranan, began their walk at Sivarakottai and reached Valayankulam. After an overnight stay there, they would leave for the Collectorate to hand over a petition to the Collector on Wednesday.
They opposed the State Government from taking over cultivable land for setting up a SIPCOT special economic zone, airport expansion and for four-laning work.
Free house site pattas for the shelter-less poor, immediate distribution of registration card for members of Farmers and Agricultural Labourers’ Welfare Board and its benefits and promotion of natural farming techniques were other demands.
The association wanted the Government to implement the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme works so that it did not affect agricultural activities. The wage should be increased to Rs. 100 a day. Extension of the branch canal under the Nilaiyur-Kambikudi Canal scheme and payment of compensation to those whose land were acquired for the project were other demands.
