Following High Court's directive

The results of elections held to the Pachaiyappa’s Trust Board in Chennai were declared on Wednesday, after the Madras High Court directed the Interim Administrator or the Chief Election Officer (CEO) to declare the results immediately.

S. Jaichandran and R. Prathapakumar were elected trustees from the constituency of Hindu Members of the Senate, while K. Hemanath and V.Ramanathan were elected from among approved teachers of the Pachaiyappa’s Trust colleges. R.Prabakaran was elected from the College Council.

The elections were held to fill five vacancies of the post of trustee in the Board.

Earlier in the day, passing further orders in the case, Justice R. Sudhakar said a report should be filed in the court confirming the election results.

On April 19, the court directed the interim administrator, T.N. Seshan, a former Chief Election Commissioner, to conduct the elections to fill the vacancies as per a time schedule specified in its order. Pursuant to this, elections were conducted on May 26 and a report was filed by the interim administrator on June 5. (Mr. Seshan resigned from the post on June 6.)

The report said N. Sankaralingam, a retired Deputy Collector, was appointed as the CEO and B. Raja was the Electoral Registration Officer. R.P. Vijayakumar was the Returning officer. The elections were held on May 26. It was peaceful. The results have not been declared following a court direction of May 23. The election records had been kept in safe custody.

Counsel for the interim administrator sought a court direction to declare the results.

Following this request, Mr. Justice Sudhakar ordered that the results be declared immediately.

The matter has been posted for June 28.
