100 people screened in the eye section

VELLORE: Praveen’s Charitable Trust and Schieffelin Institute of Health-Research and Leprosy Centre (SIHRLC), Karigiri, organised a free health and eye camp at Thirumuruga Kripananda Variar Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Kangeyanallur near here on Saturday. VIT University Chancellor G. Viswanathan inaugurated it.

Over 650 people participated in it. A medical team of 12 members from the SIHRLC, led by medical officer of Community Health Department Rajshekar, attended to the patients. Ophthalmologist Sherly said more than 100 people were screened in the eye section and 40 selected for cataract surgery.

“Several children had poor vision. We have advised the parents to have their refractive error corrected. If the families are poor, we will see how best to help them,” she said.

Dr. Sherly praised the organisers - G. Praveen Kaarthic, Suraj Nandakumar, Githin J. Mathew, Aditya B. Chidambaram, M.S.S. Ramanathan and A. Amuthan, all students of VIT University.

Mr. Kaarthic said registration was closed after the number of patients crossed 650.

Each person was given a card with details such as their name, age and address.

It also indicated the room number they had to go to. Prior to the camp, the organisers distributed 5,000 handbills to all the houses in and around Kangeyanallur.

They also put up 300 wall posters and displayed 10 digital banners to publicise the event.

The National Service Scheme volunteers of the school guided the patients.
