CHENNAI: A total of 5,016 people were arrested during a 10-day storming operation that concluded on Friday, City Police Commissioner R. Sekar said here on Saturday.

Those arrested include 142 anti-social elements, 268 ex-convicts, 108 persons against whom warrants had been issued, and 458 persons for drunken driving. Cases were registered against 1,595 people for rash driving, Mr. Sekar told reporters.

To a query on the Madras High Court seeking details of pending cases, he said the Director-General of Police had formed a committee of senior officials to look into the matter and present a report.

Mr. Sekar said strict action would be taken against overloading in share autorickshaws and autorickshaws. Traffic officers have been told to identify parking lots to reduce congestion.

VCDs, DVDs seized

In an operation conducted recently, the Central Crime Branch seized VCDs, DVDs, wrappers and DVD writers worth Rs.1 crore. The seized discs include latest Tamil films .

This year, 141 persons have been arrested and 136 cases registered so far.

Equipment, CDs and DVDs worth over Rs.11.14 crore have been recovered from the arrested persons.

Three persons, Durai of Burma Bazaar, Abdul Rahman of Border Thottam and Abdul Raja of China Bazaar have been detained in connection with fake and pirated CDs under the Goondas Act.
