A total of 496 persons belonging to various political parties, including 22 women were arrested for blocking trains or attempting to block trains in various railway stations in Vellore district on Tuesday. The protest was part of a Statewide agitation called for by the MDMK demanding a total boycott by India of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which is to begin in Colombo on November 15, and against India’s decision to send External Affairs Minister Salman Kurshid for the meet.

A partial bandh was observed in Tirupattur as part of the agitation. Agitations were held at the Katpadi, Tirupattur, Gudiyatham, Jolarpet and Vellore town railway stations.

In Tiruvannamalai district also, parties staged road rokos and staged demonstration. A lesser known political outfit, Social Democratic Party of India, blocked trains here and 30 protestors were arrested. As many as 65 cadre of MDMK and 15 cadre of Naam Tamizhar Katchi who tried to block trains in Polur were also arrested.

Cadre of Arunthathi Makkal Katchi staged a demonstration. Effigies of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa were burnt.
