Special teams constituted by the Collector, C. Samayamoorthy, seized 42.3 kg of cow dung powder kept in shops for sale were seized by special teams in surprise raids conducted across the district on Saturday.

Collector C. Samayamoorthy told The Hindu that the checks were carried out following reports that about 60 per cent to 70 per cent of the people who had committed suicide in the last two years in the district consumed cow dung powder.

As many as 54 teams comprising officials from revenue, rural development and health departments as well as staff working in Town Panchayat, Corporation and municipal offices took part in the raid. Mr. Samayamoorthy said that a total of 1,374 shops were checked and the cow dung powder was seized from 69 shops in Tirupur, Udumalpet and Dharapuram revenue divisions.


“We are going to book cases against the shop owners for keeping the cow dung powder despite warnings from the administration,” he added.

He said that the cow dung powder seized was kept for sale in unbranded sachets of 5 gm, 10 gm and 15 gm and also in bulk.
