THANJAVUR: It has been planned to distribute free cycles worth Rs. 5.7 crore to 21,015 students in Thanjavur district this year, said S. S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, here on Thursday.
He participated in a function to distribute free cycles to Plus One students at Rajah’s Government Higher Secondary School. He also distributed spectacles to school students under Ilanchirar Kannoli Padukappu Thittam and identity cards to beneficiaries under Kalaignar’s insurance scheme for life saving treatment.
The Minister said that a total of 10,600 students belonging to backward class, 5,337 belonging to most backward class, 4,880 to Adhidravidars and 198 students belonging to other castes will get the cycles in the district.
Under Ilanchirar Kannoli Padukappu Thittam, spectacles will be distributed to 5,441 students. With respect to Kalaignar’s insurance scheme for life saving treatment, 57,000 persons have so far been photographed in the district and identity cards for 5,817 families have been prepared.
Sixty persons have undergone life saving treatment at various hospitals in the district under the scheme, the Minister said.
