: The first phase of the Rs.1081.40 crore Outer Ring Road project is scheduled to be completed by December 2012, Housing Minister R.Vaithilingam told the Assembly on Thursday.

Initiating the debate on the demands in his department, Mr.Vaithilingam said work was in progress for the 30-km-long ORR from NH 45 (Vandalur) to NH 205 (Nemilichery). Land acquisition for the second phase from NH 205 to TPP Road for a length of 32.8 km covering 27 villages was under progress and lands to the extent of 253.08.05 hectares has been completed. The balance is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

On the phase II of MRTS from Velachery to St.Thomas Mount, the Minister said that the work on the Rs.495.74 crore project was in progress and the work is expected to be completed by December 2012.

The Minister said that the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority had been directed to prepare a plan for the area south of the Chennai Metropolitan Area comprising Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, Guduvanchery – Nandivaram Town Panchayat, Thiruporur Town Panchayat and parts of Kattankulathur and Thiruporur Panchayat Unions. A planning area of an extent of 562 sq km falling in 134 revenue villages had been delineated.

A Development Planning Committee has also been formed to oversee the proposed development plan that envisaged orderly development in this fast developing area. Excepting for proposed major roads, no large-scale land acquisition would be taken up.

The plan would be ready by the end of this financial year, Mr.Vaithilingam added.
