With the issue of a portion of the land at the Anna Arivalayam complex [belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Trust] meant for Open Space Reservation (OSR) having come up for discussion in the Chennai Corporation Council a few days ago, the DMK president M. Karunanidhi clarified that the land was allotted as early as in 1988 during the President’s rule in Tamil Nadu.
In a statement here, he recalled the order of the Tamil Nadu government allowing the DMK Trust to have the land, “subject to the condition that the Trust should maintain the OSR as Arignar Anna Recreation Park for the public and no construction should be made in future on the open space.”
Mr. Karunanidhi recalled that the AIADMK government in 2004 had sought a clarification from the Trust on the grounds that the land was not properly maintained.
“A detailed reply was sent to the government on July 4, 2004 and a petition was also filed in the High Court.
Later, the Corporation in 2007 asked the Trust to maintain it as an open space. I hope the Mayor will stop raising the issue after my explanation,” he said.
Mr. Karunanidhi said the land before the Kamaraj Arangam [which belongs to the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Charitable Trust] was also allotted by the Corporation in 1988. “But the Corporation never questioned the allocation.”.
