Continuous medical education programme inaugurated The Madurai unit is the second largest in the State next to the institute in Chennai

MADURAI: The State Government had sanctioned a special spine unit, which will function under the Orthopaedics Department of Government Rajaji Hospital, said V.K. Samilal, Dean in-charge, Madurai Medical College (MMC), here.

Inaugurating a two-day continuous medical education programme on `spine' on Saturday, Dr. Samilal said the Orthopaedics Department of Madurai Medical College was the second largest in the State next to the institute in Chennai.

He added that spine surgery was of great importance as it involved the teamwork of various specialists.

V. Pandiarajan of MMC, who is retiring after 28 years of Government service, was felicitated on the occasion. Describing him as a pioneer, Dr. Samilal said that Dr. Pandiarajan dedicated himself to his job, especially to traumatology.

Faculty members from different medical colleges are participating in the programme.

The purpose of the programme was to keep abreast of the latest advances in spine surgery and also to offer training to post-graduate students from basics to the most advanced procedures in spine surgery, according to the organisers.
