Tirunelveli: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has reopened many buildings for the poor which were closed abruptly during the erstwhile AIADMK Government, according to Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan. She was speaking at the inauguration of an orphanage for the abandoned children at Venkateswarapuram, Alangulam panchayat union, Tirunelveli, in the presence of Minister for Information and Technology Poongothai Aladi Aruna on Friday.

The new building was christened as Sathya Ammaiyar Memorial Home for the children. It was constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. After inaugurating the building, Ms. Jeevan extended financial assistance to as many as 115 beneficiaries under Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar marriage assistance scheme. The weaker sections were getting benefitted through the Department of Social Welfare and the Chief Minister was attaching great importance to this sector by allocating huge funds. A sum of Rs. 28 crore was extended to as many as 14, 429 beneficiaries under the marriage assistance scheme during the last four years. A whopping financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 667 crore was given to beneficiaries in various districts across the State.

Meanwhile, she urged the people to avail the benefits they were entitled to. The Minister for Information and Technology honoured Muthulakshmi, a student of Government Higher Secondary School, Nalammalpuram, with a shawl and awarded a sum of Rs. 5, 000 on the occasion. The State government was setting aside over a sum of Rs. 3, 500 crore towards Social Welfare Department every year. With this, the basic requirements of the common people including food, accommodation and marriage assistance were being fulfilled. M. Jayaraman, Collector presided over the programme.
