Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko lauds Red Cross

NAGAPATTINAM: A three-day orientation programme for the volunteers of Youth Red Cross Societies commenced in E. G. S. Pillai College of Arts and Science here on Thursday.

M. Ponnavaikko, Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, in his inaugural address lauded the spirit behind the Red Cross Society, formed 150 years ago and said that the spirit of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, universality, independence and service that governed the Red Cross Societies world over should govern the normal course of individual’s life.

He invoked the Law of Induction to drive home the point that one has to live by setting examples for others. “People should emulate the goodness that we set for others,” Mr. Ponnavaikko said. His speech was replete with emphatic statements for the cause of Tamil language and Tamil pride.

Youth Red Cross Society of Bharathidasan University jointly with Youth Red Cross Society of E. G. S. Pillai College of Arts and Science, Nagapattinam is conducting the programme for all YRCSs in arts and science colleges of eight districts, affiliated to Bharathidasan University. Major participation is from YRCSs of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam.

“On any given day, at least one student from this college donates blood and that gives me immense pride,” said R.Kaladaran, Principal, E.G.S.Pillai College of Arts and Science. According to him, education adds worth to the society only when students become better human beings.

G. S. Parameshwaran, Secretary of E. G. S. Pillai group of institutions, K. Ellakuvan, honorary secretary of Indian Red Cross Society, N. Kaliaperumal, scheme officer of YRCS, E. G. S. Pillai College, and S. Karupayan, Coordinator of YRC, Bharathidasan University, were among the speakers.
