New system to come into force on September 17

CHENNAI: The passport authorities are introducing the online registration of application for passports under the tatkal system.

The new system will come into force on September 17, said Sumathi Ravichandran, regional passport officer, Chennai.

She said that under the existing system the application had to be submitted at the Regional Passport Office after collecting the token.

Under the new online system applicants could log on to the website http://passport.gov.in.

The new system would enable applicants to know the time and date for the submission of applications according to their convenience, Ms. Ravichandran said.

Immediately after registration, the filled in application form would be printed after mentioning the Internet registration number and the date and time of the submission of applications, she said.

“All the applicant has to do is paste photographs, fill the remaining columns in the application and then submit the same at one of the counters at the Regional Passport Office on the date and time given to them, attaching the required documents,” Ms. Ravichandran said.

The applicants should produce the originals of the documents attached along with the application at the time of submission.

The existing system of issuing tokens for the submission of passport applications under the tatkal system would be dispensed with, and the registration of applications on the Net would be made mandatory from September 17, she added.
