The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials found a dyeing unit operating illegally near Tirupur-Dharapuram highway here on Tuesday.

The felonious operation of the unit was noticed by a TNPCB flying squad comprising Environmental Engineer (EE) P. Asokan and Assistant Environmental Engineer A Shanmugam during surprise checks. The unit was found discharging effluents into drains in large quantities without adhering to the pollution control norms.

TNPCB officials told The Hindu that the power and water supply to the unit would be disconnected very soon exercising the powers under Section 33 A of Water Act, 1974, and the premises would be sealed.

“We have also recommended to the TNPCB headquarters for legal action against the unit for functioning without obeying the closure orders issued by the Madras High Court on January 28,” officials said. The officials added that criminal prosecution would be initiated against the illegal operations of the dyeing unit noticed by the public at Maniyaramaplayam two days ago.
