“Criminal action could be initiated”

Officials on Thursday stopped yet another child marriage in the district. Collector Mahesan Kasirajan said on a tip off, a team of officials including District Social Welfare Officer, women police personnel visited Pappakudi village near Thiruppuvanam and carried out enquiry with the bride and her family members. Since it was established that she was just 16 years old, they were asked to stop the marriage.

The officials had got an injunction order from G.N. Saravanakumar, Judicial Magistrate, Sivaganga, to prevent the marriage. The order was served to the parties.


Mr. Kasirajan said criminal action could be initiated against the marriage parties, who were responsible for the child marriage and could be sentenced for two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.1 lakh could be imposed.
