About 400 nursing students belonging to private colleges observed fast here on Thursday demanding equal job opportunities in Government hospitals.

Referring to the Madras High Court’s ratification of State Government’s approval for recruitment of nursing students trained in private institutions as staff nurses in government hospitals, the agitating students said the protest by government college students against equal treatment extended to private college students was tantamount to disregarding the court order.

The agitating students demanded equality in treatment, reasoning out that the private colleges were better placed with regard to technological services and infrastructure facilities.

Also, students of government and private college students appear for common qualifying examination.

Moreover, when students of private engineering, medical and teaching institutions were accepted for appointment in Government sector, there was no reason why those in private nursing colleges must be left out, according to speakers at the fast. The agitators urged the State Government to uphold social justice and welcomed its decision to recruit nurses and community health nurses through Medical Recruitment Board.
