THANJAVUR: Nursing students, staff nurses, tutors of Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital donated blood to mark World Nurses' Day on Wednesday.
G. Ambujam, Medical Superintendent, Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, who inaugurated the blood donation camp said that the day is observed to remember the services of Florence Nightingale's dedication and service to humanity. Every year, Thanjavur Medical College celebrates it by taking a march past in the morning, hoisting flag, donating blood and planting saplings. Over 50 students, staff nurses and tutors donated blood in today's camp.
Radhika Michael, Blood Bank Medical officer bank at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, and Muthkumaran, Deputy Superintendent of Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, participated in the event.
Dr. Michael said that Thanjavur Medical College Hospital blood bank supplied 500 to 600 units of blood required by the Medical College hospital in a month. Moreover, the blood bank has facility to store the components of blood and supply them. Nearly 70 to 80 units of fresh frozen plasma is supplied by the bank per month to both Thanjavur Medical College Hospital and Rajah Mirasudhar Hospital.
Fifteen units of platelets are supplied per month to both hospitals by the bank. Blood is collected from voluntary donors through camps and on occasions like this. Ambujam appreciated the nurses who have come forward to donate blood.
