Udhagamandalam: With litter, particularly plastic bags posing a major problem at the scenic Pykara falls and Pykara Boat House inside the Pykara reserve forest near here, the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of the Government Arts College organised a campaign to spruce up the area on Tuesday.

Collected

Led by the NSS Programme Officer, V. Alagar Ramanujam, and the Forest Ranger, Pykara, Venkatasamy, the 35 volunteers, including 15 girls, collected the discarded items and disposed them of safely.

Since the students utilised the opportunity to create awareness among the tourists about the harm caused to the environment by the non-degradable litter like plastics, many of the visitors also joined the cleanliness campaign.

The District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris South Division, Rakesh Kumar Jagenia, said that over the next two months the NSS volunteers and forest staff would participate in cleaning programmes during weekends at Pykara waterfalls and the film-shooting hill, which have over the years become extremely popular tourist spots.
