MADURAI: The first Garib Rath weekly special train was operated on the Chennai-Nagercoil sector on Wednesday. Garib Rath or ‘poor man’s chariot’ is aimed at giving an opportunity for the poor people to travel in air-conditioned coaches at a cheaper fare.
“The Madurai-Chennai fare in Garib Rath is Rs.120 lesser than the fare of third AC travel in Pandiyan Express,” a railway official said. While the third AC fare in Pandiyan Express is Rs.574, the Garib Rath travel would only cost Rs. 454, including Rs.25 for a bed roll, he added.
Train No. 0607 would leave Chennai Central at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesdays till August 12. It would run through Chennai Egmore, Tiruchi, Madurai and reach Nagercoil at 11 a.m. on Thursdays.
In the return direction the train would start from Nagercoil at 1.30 p.m. on Thursdays till August 13 and reach Chennai Central at 4.45 a.m. the next day via the same route.
“The frequency would be increased based on the patronage subject to availability of track and rakes,” the official said.
