The Madras High Court on Tuesday ordered notice to the Centre on habeas corpus petitions filed by two life convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case seeking a direction to the authorities to produce them before the court and set them at liberty.

A Division Bench comprising Justices S.Rajeswaran and P.N.Prakash adjourned the matter to December 10.

The petitioners, B.Robert Payas alias Kumaralingam and S.Jayakumar, both Sri Lankan nationals, said their detention in prison beyond 20 years was illegal and violated Article 21. The two challenged their continued incarceration and that too without placing their case before an advisory board after completion of 20 years.
