Divisional Fire Officer T.Selvaraja has appealed the people to celebrate incident and accident-free Deepavali.

Fire and Rescue Department conducted an awareness campaign for sellers of crackers in connection with safety norms to be followed while selling crackers. The DFO who presided over the meeting explained to them about the do's and dont's while selling crackers.

Later, he said that Kanyakumari district administration could issue licences for sellers to sell crackers only up to 600 kg. For crackers above 600 kg, the sellers have to get a licence from the Explosives Department which came under the Central Government.

There are around 156 licensed cracker sellers in the district and of that around 116 persons participated the meeting. The sellers have to stock quantities as prescribed in the license and not exceed the limit. Fireworks were not a material for display and sales and selling of fireworks in marriage halls was strictly banned.

Two teams – one for Agastheeswaram and Thovalai blocks and another for Vilavancode and Kalkulam blocks, have been formed to check norm violations and make the sellers follow the safety measures strictly.

The teams would be led by Assistant Divisional Fire Officer Saravana Babu. The fire station officers of the respective blocks are members.

He further added that shops selling crackers should be a concrete structure with a minimum plinth area of 9 sq mt and should not exceed 25 sq mt of area.
