A 51-year-old widow, working as an caretaker in a noon meal centre was found murdered near a coconut grove at Mullai Nagar near Keezhakarai on Saturday.

Police said the victim, identified as V.Arumugam, who was working at a noon meal centre at Meenavar Kudiyiruppu (Mangaleswari Nagar) and staying in a ‘farm godown’ in the coconut grove at Mullai Nagar, was found dead with her head smashed.

Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan, who visited the spot, said she was staying in the ‘godown’ in the grove, owned by one Ibrahim of Keezhakarai after a quarrel with her daughter-in-law and ‘there was some kind of motive’ in the murder. She was visiting Ibrahim’s house to do some domestic work, he said.

He said the body was in a decomposed condition as she could have been murdered on Wednesday night. She did not go to the noon meal centre on Thursday, he said adding her son, Ganesan also did not meet her on Friday. He had met her on Tuesday evening and the murder should have taken place thereafter, the SP said. It could not be a murder for gain as the gold stud she was wearing was intact, he said. The victim’s son, a construction worker, suspected motive behind the murder and ‘it needs to be probed,” the SP said.
