Arcot N. Veerasamy files papers

CHENNAI: As nominations for the May 8 Assembly elections came to a close on Thursday, the total number of persons who submitted their papers was likely to cross 2,500, Election Department sources said.

Among those who filed their nomination papers on the final day were Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam treasurer Arcot N. Veerasamy and the former State Minister, Raja Kannappan.

A total of 2,164 persons filed their nominations till Wednesday. Reports in this regard were awaited from some Assembly segments, the sources said.

Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said the Election Commission had appointed V. Kapoor as Special Observer for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry.

Apart from the 234 Observers (general) and 50 Observers (expenditure), Mr. Kapoor would monitor the poll process in the State.

The main objective of his appointment was to ensure free and fair elections.

He would also monitor the enforcement of the model code of conduct.

He would visit the State shortly.
