The Privileges Committee of the Assembly will not hold any proceedings against the Editor of the Tamil magazine “Nakkheeran” for three weeks. The submission was made before the First Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice M.Venugopal by the Advocate-General (AG), A.Navaneethakrishnan, when an appeal challenging a single Judge’s order with regard to the appearance of the Editor, R.R.Gopal, before the committee, came up.

The matter related to the issue of a show-cause notice to Mr.Gopal by the Assembly Secretary of January 28 last year in connection with a publication of a news item in the magazine dated January 7, 2012 for making certain statements attributed to the Chief Minister. A single Judge had directed the committee to permit the journalist to be represented by an advocate, who would appear along with him in the proceedings before the panel.

The present appeal by the Assembly Secretary is directed against this order. When the matter came up, the AG assured the court by way of an undertaking that the committee would not hold any proceedings for three weeks. Recording this undertaking, the Bench ordered that the matter be listed for further hearing after that period.
