TIRUCHI: Allaying fears among the employees attached to the Transport Department, State Transport Minister K. N. Nehru said that the work pertaining to the issue of licence and registration would not be privatised.

Addressing a seminar on `Development of Transport Department' organised by the Tamil Nadu Transport Employees' Association here on Sunday, Mr. Nehru said he would never take decisions that would be detrimental to the welfare of employees. Tamil Nadu accounted for 89 lakh vehicles, he said and noted that he was aware of the need to fill the vacancies at various levels. He hoped his meeting in Chennai with trade union leaders on Monday would be of help in addressing various issues.

He invited the association to depute its representatives for the meeting to present technical details.

Earlier, the State president of the association, K. Balasubramanian, pleaded for promotional avenues for the ministerial staff of the Department and filling up of the vacant posts of Regional Transport Officer, the norms for which were framed one-and-a-half decades ago.
