Final list of candidates to be released on April 24

MADURAI: There has been no significant violation of model code of conduct in the district where elections will be held for 10 Assembly constituencies on May 8.

The Election Commission guidelines on the number of vehicles and persons accompanying a candidate while filing nomination papers were also strictly complied with, the Collector, D. Raajendiran, has said.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, he said a total of 172 candidates had filed nomination papers. Nominations would be taken up for scrutiny on April 24 and the final list of candidates published the same day.

Mr. Raajendiran said election observers had been nominated for each of the ten Assembly segments. Two observers (one for five constituencies) would exclusively monitor expenditure. Any information or complaints regarding elections could be passed on to the observers.

A total of 15,32,230 voters were issued Elector's Photo Identity Cards (EPICs). In the special campaign, 5.31 lakh voters were issued EPIC. More than 3,000 cards were issued through link centres where applications for duplicate (on lost cards) or corrections (on wrong entry cards) were taken up. So far 75.41 per cent of the voters were given EPICs. The Collector said electronic voting machine (EVM) demonstration would be held at all constituencies soon.
