CUDDALORE: Neyveli Lignite Corporation has won the ‘Eco Innovation Golden Peacock Award – 2008’ for its innovate product ‘Potassium humate’ through its research and development activity.
A statement from the NLC said the feat could be accomplished with the encouragement and care bestowed upon environment management and research and development activities by A.R.Ansari, NLC director, Planning and Projects.
Potassium humate obtained from lignite has gained a new dimension in the field of sustainable agriculture. On recognising the innovative research work, the World Environment Foundation, on May 9, selected NLC as winner from more than 200 participating companies.
The jury, headed by P. N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India and member of the UN Human Rights Commission, had announced the award.
The award was recently presented to the NLC by Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden and Chairman of World Council for Corporate Governance, the U.K., and Madhav Mehra, president, World Council for Corporate Governance, the U.K., at the Global Convention on Climate Change held at S.M. Convention Centre, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.
S. Santhanam, Deputy General Manager, Centre for Applied and Research Development (CARD) of the NLC, and V. Manoharan, Chief Manager, CARD, received the award on behalf of the NLC.
It may be noted that NLC has already obtained the patent for the new process developed by CARD for the extraction of humic acid from lignite and recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Research Development Corporation to commercialise the technology.
