Nine village panchayats in Tiruvannamalai district are all set to be upgraded into town panchayats. The district administration conducted a mandatory consultative meeting of local body representatives concerned, here on Tuesday.
District administration had recommended upgrading of Vengikkal, Thandarampattu, Thanippadi, Kalasapakkam, Sandavasal, Sevur, S.V.Nagaram, Devikapuram and Thellar panchayats into town panchayats in 2012. Acting on that recommendation, the government has asked the district administration to conduct preliminary consultation meeting inviting village panchayat presidents, panchayat union chairpersons and councillors concerned.
A meeting was organised and Collector Vijay Pingale presided over it. “Minutes of this meeting would soon be sent to the government,” Mr. Pingale told The Hindu .
Malaiyaman Thirumudikkari, assistant director of town panchayats told The Hindu, “Once upgraded , a panchayat will get a complete administrative system including executive officer, clerks, tax collectors, drinking water workers, streetlight workers and public health workers. Hence, the local body can carry out several of its operations with ease and it would also become possible to audit the administration with the help of State government’s local fund auditors. Central and State governments can easily monitor the operations and people will get improved services in public health, drinking water supply and street light fronts. Project works could be executed promptly as the town panchayats will have an engineering wing. These were explained to the local body representatives at the meeting.”
Assistant director (panchayats) Selvakumar, panchayat union chairpersons Amutha Kumarasamy (Tiruvannamalai), Janakiraman (Thandarampattu), Jayaraman (Kalasapakkam) and panchayat presidents concerned participated in the meeting.
