Tirupur: The district police claimed that they had solved as many as 32 cases of robbery and housebreaking registered in Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Karur and Dindigul districts with the arrest of nine persons here on Friday.

The arrested were K. Chelladurai (25) and K. Mahendran (24), both of whom had served prison sentence after they got detained under the Goondas Act in Karur district prior to the commitment of crimes, along with their seven accomplices who helped them sell the stolen goods.

Superintendent of Police A. Arun told reporters that Chelladurai and Mahendran had robbed a total of 116.75 sovereign jewellery, four cell phones and four two-wheelers.

“Of this, 58.75 sovereign of jewellery and two motorbikes have been recovered,” the SP said.

Of the total cases, 18 had been committed in Tirupur district, six in Karur, three each in Erode and Dindigul and two in Namakkal district.

Mr. Arun gave away token rewards to the members of special squad who arrested the accused from different parts of the district.

The team members included Deputy Superintendents of Police S. Aravind (Dharapuram sub-division) and S. Jeeva (Kangayam sub-division), Inspector of Police (Kangayam station) A.K. Thanagapandian, Sub-Inspector (Alangiyam station) S. Veera Gandhi and constables Dhanapal, Periyasamy, Elamvalzhy, Chinnasamy and Manimuthu.
