Nearly 300 resorts/hotels in and around the forests in The Nilgiris district extract 12 lakh litres of water a day from borewells depleting sub-soil water. Also, hotels and other establishments are collecting water from rivers, streams and canals in the forest for their own use.

This has been submitted in a public interest litigation petition filed by Elephant G.Rajendran, an advocate of T.Nagar here before the Madras High Court.

The First Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice R.K.Agrawal and Justice M.Sathyanarayanan has ordered notice to the State Forests Secretary and other authorities, returnable by November 4.
