It will provide free service to farmers
Udhagamandalam: With a view to prevent farmers from being exploited by middlemen a facility called the ‘Nilgiri Marketing Committee’ came into being here on Friday. Councillor of Kandhal near here, R.Elango, assumed charge as the first chairman.
Mr. Elango had been elected unopposed, said Assistant Director of Agriculture, M.S. Subbian. A tea planter of Kotagiri, M.Kannan, had been elected unopposed as the vice- chairman of the Committee. Among the members of the Committee were small and medium farmers, traders and officials nominated by the Government.
Pointing out that the Committee would act as a bridge between the farmers and the traders, Mr. Subbian said that it would provide free service to the farmers and reduce dependence on ‘mundies’ in places such as Mettupalayam which collect a sizable amount as commission for marketing the produce of the farmers here.
However, the Committee could not in any way interfere with the functioning of the Uzhavar Sandhais. Mr.Elango said that steps would be taken to ensure that the Committee functioned in an effective manner and it served its purpose. Superintendent of the Committee, Umapathy, said that to begin with marketing of vegetables would be regulated here and at Gudalur, Coonoor and Kotagiri. Later, it would be extended to the entire district. Earlier, the objectives of the Committee were explained to the members.
